A Shikara ride on Dal Lake is one of the most memorable experiences in Kashmir. These beautifully crafted traditional wooden boats, often referred to as the “Gondolas of Venice” or the “Camel of Dal Lake,” usually cost around ₹500 to ₹800 per hour. Shikaras are widely used for sightseeing, photography, and exploring the famous floating markets of Srinagar.
The Shikara Experience -
Drift across the calm, crystal-clear waters of Dal Lake while enjoying breathtaking views of the majestic Zabarwan Mountains. Beyond a relaxing ride, Shikaras also serve as an important mode of transport for locals, passing floating vendors who sell fresh vegetables, saffron, flowers, and authentic Kashmiri handicrafts directly from their boats.
Many Shikara rides range from 1 to 4 hours, offering access to some of the most scenic and culturally rich attractions around Dal Lake. Along the journey, visitors can explore several iconic spots:
Char Chinar – A picturesque island known for its four grand Chinar trees, believed to have been established by Murad, son of Mughal Emperor Akbar.
Floating Market – A lively early-morning marketplace where local vendors trade fresh vegetables, flowers, and daily essentials from interconnected boats.
Nehru Park – A charming park situated in the middle of the lake, popular among tourists for relaxation and photography.
Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh – Beautiful Mughal-era terraced gardens located along the lake’s shores, often included as stops during Shikara tours.
Pricing -
A standard 1-hour Shikara ride on Dal Lake generally costs between ₹500 and ₹800, while a half-day excursion of around 4 hours may range from ₹1,500 to ₹2,000. It is advisable to discuss and negotiate the fare with the local boatmen, popularly known as hanjis, before starting the ride.
Best Time for a Shikara Ride -
Early mornings are ideal for enjoying peaceful surroundings, stunning photography, and witnessing the famous floating market in action. Evening rides, especially during sunset, provide breathtaking views as the lake reflects the golden hues of the sky.
What to Carry -
The weather around the lake can feel cool due to the breeze, even during summer. Carry a light jacket or a traditional Kashmiri shawl for comfort, and don’t forget your camera to capture the scenic beauty of the experience.
