Overview

Gulmarg, meaning “Meadow of Flowers,” is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in Kashmir. Located about 60 kilometers from Srinagar, Gulmarg is surrounded by the breathtaking Himalayan mountains and lush green meadows that attract visitors throughout the year. The destination is especially famous for the world-renowned Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world. The first phase takes visitors to Kongdori Station at an altitude of 8,530 feet, while the second phase reaches nearly 12,293 feet, offering spectacular views of snow-covered peaks and valleys. Gulmarg is a premier hill station in Kashmir, famous for its snow-capped peaks and vibrant meadows.

Key attractions include the Gulmarg Gondola—one of the world's highest cable cars, the high-altitude Alpather Lake, and the scenic Gulmarg Golf Course. Gulmarg features a mix of high-altitude adventure spots and peaceful natural landscapes.

Tourists in Gulmarg can enjoy horse riding, trekking, and excursions to scenic spots like Strawberry Valley, Leopard Valley, and the frozen lake of Alpather near Kongdori. During winter, Gulmarg transforms into a snowy wonderland and becomes one of India’s top skiing destinations, known for its natural slopes and thrilling winter sports. The town also comes alive with festive celebrations during Christmas and New Year. Historically, Gulmarg was known as “Gaurimarg,” but Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak later renamed it Gulmarg, making it a favorite retreat for Mughal rulers and British travelers alike.
